World Press Freedom Day is observed on May 3rd, offering a timely moment to ask: what is the state of that freedom in Australia?  

2014 saw Australian Journalist Peter Greste received a seven-year jail sentence for allegations of ‘airing false news’ as a reporter for Al-Jazeera in Egypt. 

His story captured the attention of the nation and became an everyday reminder of the importance of press freedom. But things haven’t improved substantially in the years since.
